Homelessness week 2025 – a glimpse into Jarrod’s reality

August 5, 2025

Did you know that homelessness in New South Wales has risen by 18% over the past decade, with an estimated 37,000 people experiencing homelessness in 2025? Nationally, the picture is even more alarming – 135,000 Australians are now without a home, marking a 21% increase since 2015 (ABS & AIHW, 2025).

Behind these statistics are people navigating complex realities. For many, the path into homelessness isn’t one moment, but a series of circumstances that build over time. Homelessness Week is a time to reflect on what’s driving the crisis – and to listen to the people living through it.

Jarrod, 22, is a regular visitor at Dom’s Place, CatholicCare’s drop-in centre in Hornsby that offers connection, support, and essential services to people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

“I found out about Dom’s Place from other homeless friends at the park,” says Jarrod. “Dad kicked me out because I wasn’t getting a job. I have bipolar and I just couldn’t manage work. Sometimes I’d sleep in my car, sometimes on the street, sometimes at a friend’s place. Now, with the help of Dom’s Place I’m in temporary accommodation.”

Like many young people navigating the complex and under-resourced homelessness system, Jarrod found himself in a grey area – too old to access some youth services, but still vulnerable and in urgent need of support.

“I was nervous to come here at first – I thought it would be like a clinic. But I was surprised how cool it was. I get to play guitar, chat to people, eat. I come here every day. Dom’s Place helped me find community, support and food.”

One of the biggest barriers for people experiencing homelessness is stigma – misconceptions about who becomes homeless and why.

“There’s this stereotype of people who are homeless,” Jarrod explains, “but at Dom’s, nobody judges because everyone’s fighting their own battle – court stuff, kids, money issues …”

With the support of CatholicCare, Jarrod has begun to set goals for his future.

“My goals are to finish a Cert IV in Mental Health, do a diploma in Community Services, and get my car and bike licences. I want to do Scouts again like when I was a kid. If I ever get there, maybe I’ll help other people like I’m being helped now.”

Did you know?

Young people make up nearly a quarter of the homeless population in Australia. If they can’t access the right support early, things often get harder.
