Accelerating action this International Women’s Day

March 3, 2025

A reflection by Ashleigh, Community Outreach Manager & representatives of the CatholicCare team

With the rise of global movements like #MeToo and women’s advocacy around climate action, the world is more aware of gender injustices. The theme for International Women’s Day 2025 is ‘Accelerate Action’ which is all about moving from awareness to action. Indeed, awareness is the first step in creating change. But the greatest change happens when we have measurable outcomes and long-term solutions.

The theme, ‘Accelerate Action’ is about pushing for the dismantling of systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality, such as unequal pay, limited access to education, and under-representation in leadership. It encourages reforms in institutions and policies, creating a sense of urgency around addressing deep-rooted biases and outdated systems.

To further explore this theme, we asked several female staff at CatholicCare to share their thoughts on what accelerating action means to them.

“For me, accelerating action for gender equality means supporting and encouraging First Nations women to step out of their comfort zones, consider leadership roles and have a bigger say in decision making within their workplaces.”
Judith Murray, Aboriginal Community Engagement Manager

“Gender equality isn’t about ticking boxes – it’s about opening doors. Real progress happens when we create opportunities for the right person, based on their talent and skills, not just their gender. Let’s accelerate change the right way – by lifting people up for what they bring to the table.”
Adashani Naicker, Safeguarding & Quality Officer

“I worked for an organisation for many years who were cutting edge when it came to women’s rights. A predominately male industry but women were always treated equally with opportunities if you wished to take them. I was also one of the very first to take parental leave and return to my job. I have never felt that I have been discriminated against because I was female or that I was not equal to a male. I believe that I can do anything if I want. I also am very blessed to have a wonderful, caring husband who has supported me through thick and thin. In saying all of that I know that I know that not all have been as lucky as I have been. I believe that we are all equal in the eyes of God and we need to continue the work of the women in the 1960’s & 70’s who advocated for women less fortunate.”
Kathy White, Community Engagement Coordinator

“I believe that to ‘Accelerate Action’ for gender equality, we need to start by challenging the stereotypes and biases that still influence our perceptions and actions. As individuals, we can support and uplift women in our lives and workplaces, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions valued. As a society, we need to hold institutions accountable and push for systemic changes, such as equal pay, more inclusive policies, and better representation in leadership roles. Only by making swift and decisive moves can we create a more equitable future for women, especially those who have been historically marginalised. To me, this campaign is a powerful reminder that the time for change is now, and we all need to contribute to accelerating this progress.”
Joana Darc Alves Matias, Coordinator Out of School Hours Care.

“For me, accelerating action for gender equality means fostering inclusive environments where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. As individuals, we can challenge biases, support women in leadership, and advocate for equal opportunities. As a society, we must implement policies that promote fairness, education, and representation at all levels.”
Menatalla Lewih, Manager Community Programs – Disability & NDIS Supports
