The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) is a good starting point to begin using aged care services

If you are at the start of your adventure into aged care, CHSP can enable you to access a range of services to assist you to live independently at home, while getting practical and social support you need. Services can be tailored to best suit your needs.

CatholicCare prides itself on the quality of its team. Our Support Workers are passionate about their roles and focus on building consistent trusting relationships. We provide services across the Central Coast and Northern Sydney region.

You may be eligible for CHSP if you need support with everyday activities and you are:

  • 65 years or older
  • 50 years or older and on a low income, homeless or at risk of being homeless
  • 50 years or older and identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
  • 45 years or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on a low income, homeless or at risk of being homeless.

Before you can access CHSP you must register with My Aged Care by calling 1800 200 422 or by visiting My Aged Care.

CHSP is subsidised by the Australian Government to keep client fees reasonable and affordable. My Aged Care requires all clients to also contribute to the cost of their care, if they can afford to do so. Your CatholicCare representative will discuss with you the cost of the service provided to you as well as any contribution fee that you may be required to pay. CatholicCare has a fee support policy to support those who are unable to pay the contribution fee due to financial difficulty.

What is the difference between CHSP and home care packages (HCP)?

CHSP provides entry level support services to help older people live independently at home, while home care packages (HCP) offer more comprehensive and tailored support based on an individual’s assessed needs.

Can a person with disability access CHSP?

CHSP primarily focuses on aged care services, so it may not be specifically designed for people with disabilities. However, there may be some flexibility depending on individual circumstances.

Can a hospital organise CHSP for me?

Your starting point would be to contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, as hospitals typically do not organise CHSP services directly. You may be able to discuss your care needs with the My Aged Care Assessment Team while in hospital or soon after returning home.

 

 

Can I broker my own CHSP services?

Yes, individuals can self-manage their CHSP services by choosing their preferred service providers, within the guidelines and funding allocated to them.

Do CHSP clients have to contribute any of their own money towards services?

Yes, CHSP clients may be required to contribute towards the cost of their services based on their income and assets assessment.
